12 Things To Do Instead of Shopping on Black Friday
Get outside!
It’s that time of year when we’re bombarded with advertisements and sales, the epitome of American capitalism. And while I’m all for finding good deals on items I was already saving up for or needing to purchase, I don’t want to get sucked into buying things just because they’re on sale. Sure, maybe I’ll save $10 on a $50 item that’s 20% off. But I’ll actually save $40 if I just don’t buy anything at all. Not to mention the environmental impact of purchasing things I don’t really need.
So without further ado, here’s a quick list of other fun ways to get some dopamine today:
Go for a Walk/Hike
Sure it may be cold outside, but bundling up for even a quick walk always boosts my mood and helps me appreciate the natural world around me
Repair Something You Already Have
Last week I sewed up a few holes in some old sweaters while I watched a show. It was so satisfying to fix and free!
Consider fixing an item you already have instead of buying new when possible
Try a New Recipe
Bake some cozy cookies, cook a warming soup, make a hot beverage, etc.
Go to the Library
Find a new book or movie to enjoy at home
Read and/or Watch a Movie
Get cozy and lost in a story
Call A Friend
Nurture your social network in person or over the phone instead of through social media
Crafting/Art
Painting, knitting, drawing, crocheting, pottery, etc. Whatever peaks your interest!
Or finally hang up those pieces of artwork you’ve meaning to add to a blank wall
Yoga
Change into some comfy clothes and find a youtube video to guide you into building strength, flexibility, and relaxation
Plan a Trip
Whether it’s near or far and quick or long, it’s fun to get the ball rolling on planning your next trip!
Organize Your Space
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by your entire house, pick one room, corner, or closet you’ve been meaning to organize, declutter, or clean. Set a timer and race yourself to get as much done as you can.
Journal
Process your thoughts, explore your dreams and goals for the coming new year, or organize a plan of action to make things happen
Play Board Games
Spend time with family and/or friends while enjoy a game together
So while I’m currently researching new air fryers to replace our old broken one and buying a few gifts for Christmas, I won’t be spending my day shopping. And when possible I will shop local and small businesses. This list is a reminder to both you and I to avoid getting sucked into the consumerism of the day. While it’s easy to be tempted into buying something just because it’s on sale, in the long run it’s not going to benefit our environment, wallets, or mood. As always, it’s about balance. Find those good ideals on the large purchases you’ve been saving up for or on gifts and then get outside, be creative, and nurture connections with your family and friends.
